Korean Bamboo Grass Extract

Bamboo is a group of perennial evergreens in the true grass family Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the family.

Bamboos are some of the fastest growing plants in the world, and certain species have been recorded as growing up to 100 cm (39 in) within a 24 hour period due to a unique rhizome-dependent system.

Bamboos are of notable economic and cultural significance in South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia, being used for building materials, as a food source, and as a versatile raw product.

One member of the family found on Jeju Island – the largest island located in the southernmost part of Korea where there is a very diverse plant community, is known as Sasa quelpaertensis and locally as “Jeju Jolitdae”.

Hallasan is a massive shield volcano which forms the bulk of Jeju Island and is often taken as representing the island itself. It is the highest mountain of South Korea. The land around the mountain is an area of outstanding natural beauty and a designated National Park, the Hallasan National Park.

There is a local saying stating that “Jeju Island is Hallasan; and Hallasan is Jeju.” The mountain can indeed be seen from all places on the island, but its peak is often covered in clouds.

Among the plant varieties in the Mount Hallasan region, Sasa quelpaertensis is one of the most abundant species. It is an edible bamboo grass, and its dried leaves have traditionally been used to make a medicinal leaf tea for the treatment of diabetes and gastritis.

In terms of chemical constituents of this plant, only p-coumaric acid has been previously identified.

Tyrosinase is the copper-containing oxygenase enzyme widely distributed in plants and animals. L-tyrosine is oxidized to 3, 4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) and subsequently to DOPA quinone by the tyrosinase enzyme, which is the key step in the biosynthesis of melanin.

Tyrosinase is responsible for melanization in animals as well as browning in plants. Therefore, tyrosinase inhibitors have applications not only for skin melanin control in cosmetics but also in keeping fruits and vegetables fresh in food industry.

An innovative Korean company – Natural Solution Co has developed an extract – Jeju Jolitdaecha Extract which is a natural cosmetic ingredient which efficacy tests have shown has excellent skin lightening and anti-oxidant activity.

Natural Solution Co. applied proteomics technology for research of its whitening mechanism which showed that three proteins among differently expressed proteins were both down-regulated by treatment with Jeju Jolitdaecha Extract. These three proteins are connected to melanogenesis.
